Guided Elk Hunt by Horseback into the Back Country

Ride the historic D&SNG through a private access area for a guided elk hunt.

This is it! A hunt like no other you have ever imagined. Answer the call of the wild. Hunters will board the D&SNG Railroad the day before the hunt begins and travel by rail to the Tacoma Power Plant. San Juan Sky Outfitters LLC's (SJSO) guides will meet you and get you saddled up for a one-hour ride to your remote hunting base camp. Base camp is situated at approximately 7,700 feet in elevation. From camp, you can hunt right outside by foot or ride by horse to many different elk country locations. Camp will consist of wall tents for sleeping and dining. The sleeping tents have cots, foam pads, a wood stove, firewood and lantern and are considered quite comfortable! The camp cook is the most important person at camp and will provide you with meals you won't want to miss!

SJSO will provide your hunting license, food, a cook, tent lodging, toilet facilities and necessary supplies and equipment. Guide service will include the guide, field dressing, capping and quartering of game. SJSO also provides your horse and wranglers to care for the horses, complete packing service for your gear.

Once you've bagged your elk or between hunting adventures, feel free to explore or fish the Animas River (fishing license required). 

At the end of the hunt, you will ride horseback down to the Tacoma Power Plant and return by rail to Durango.

2nd Season Hunt October 22-28, 2010

Currently, five spaces are available. Hunters will ride the 8:15am passenger train out of Durango or 9:25am out of the D&SNG's Rockwood Station and will arrive at Tacoma Power Plant at 9:50am. After the hunt, guides will return you to Tacoma on horseback to depart on the 3:51pm train to arrive in Rockwood at 4:16pm or Durango at 5:30pm.

3rd Season Hunt November 5-11, 2010

Currently, six spaces are available.

Hunters will depart the D&SNG's Rockwood Station at 9:25am on a private motor railcar to arrive at Tacoma Power Plant at 9:50am. After the hunt, guides will return you to Tacoma on horseback to depart at 4:00pm on the railcar to arrive in Rockwood at 4:25pm.  (Departure and Return times may be adjusted.)
