Ultimate Train & Trail Ride - 2010

Your ultimate western adventure is just beginning as you leave Durango on the 8:15am steam train bound for Silverton. At Elk Park, deep in the Weimenuche Wilderness Area, Dean, the owner of San Juan Sky Outfitters, is waiting with horses to meet you. You'll get off the train ready to ride, to the envy of all those left behind!  Here along the Animas River you will begin your ride up the Colorado Trail to the top of Molas Pass.  On a clear day you will see over 20 different mountain peaks as you ride to the top of the pass.  At about half way to the summit you will stop at the Animas River overlook. Here an outfitters tent is waiting with table, chairs and fire pit. As you relax, take photos, and soak in the spectacular views, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages and chicken are being grilled for lunch. Chips, candy bars and drinks are also included. As you leave this beautiful spot keep your camera handy, you will want pictures of the 60 ft waterfall as you ride by. From Molas your shuttle will take you back to the Rockwood station to catch the train back to Durango. 

REQUIREMENTS
Minimum age is six years old
Maximum weight limit is 225 lbs.
Riders must have closed-toed shoes.

PREPARING FOR THE RIDE
In addition to closed-toed shoes (cowboy boots really are the best, but not necessary) a brimmed hat, light jacket and long pants will provide the best comfort for your ride. Rain slickers, sunscreen and water bottles are supplied as needed during your ride. This ride is primarily uphill, which is easier for our mountain-schooled and disciplined horses and for the rider.

SCHEDULE
8:15am - Train departs for Silverton
11:18am-Disembark the train at Elk Park.
1:15pm - Stop for fire grilled lunch.
2:00pm -Continue ride to the top of Molas Pass.
2:45pm - Meet the shuttle to the Rockwood Station.
4:16 pm- Board the train for the return trip to Durango.

Note: This package is not designed to allow a visit to Silverton. At the conclusion of the horseback ride you will be transported to the Rockwood Station and return to Durango by train.
