'Step Back in Time' overnight package

Step Back in Time Train & Hotel Package

Sit back and relax as we create your personalized 1880s “Step Back in Time” experience with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Grand Imperial Hotel! Your trip begins with a departure from the 1881 Durango Depot to travel the rails behind an authentic steam-powered locomotive along the route built to haul silver and gold from the mining town of Silverton. In Silverton, experience the beauty and elegance of the refurbished 1883 Grand Imperial Hotel.Durango depot

So get ready to hop on board the train for a scenic ride through the majestic San Juan Mountains pulled by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive.  With Presidential, First Class, and Deluxe-class seating options available, we are sure you’ll find the perfect trip for your 3 ½ hour train ride through the valley, cliffs and canyons along the Animas River.

Before boarding, check your luggage with our Ticket Office personnel and it will be waiting in your hotel room upon your arrival in Silverton.  Your historic experience continues when the train pulls into town and you stroll the short two blocks to the Grand Imperial Hotel. As you enter the lobby, appreciate that the name of the hotel truly tells it all. The Grand Imperial Hotel has been refurbished over the winter of 2015-16 to grandeur that exceeds the original standards when it was built in 1882.

Once settled in your beautifully appointed room, feel free to relax there or go explore what Silverton has to offer. Peruse the in-room map that lists the many quaint shops, restaurants and watering holes that are all within a convenient walk from the hotel.  You’ll also find connections for various sightseeing tours, information on Colorado-made beer, wines and spirits. Enjoying the clean, crisp air and breathtaking mountain views will come naturally. If you must stay connected to the 21st century, there is WiFi available in your room and in most locations in downtown Silverton.

Train Passage Options:
Passengers in Presidential and First Class seating have several unique cars from which to choose, and will enjoy complimentary non-alcoholic beverages served in a souvenir mug, a morning pastry, a full cash bar and a knowledgeable attendant to ensure your ride on the rails is unforgettable.
Deluxe-class passengers will be able to choose from two different Historic Narration services or our open-air Rio Grande car.
Standard class seating on a historic coach is also available.
You can also choose our Skyway Tour offering one direction of your travel being just 1 ½ hours riding in the comfort of our modern bus on US Highway 550, part of the spectacular San Juan Skyway.
