Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Named One of World’s Top Ten Train Rides

Durango, CO -The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been named one of the World’s Top Ten Train Rides by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). SATW, the largest organization of professional travel journalists and photographers, recently polled its members to come up with the “Top 10” most exciting and scenic train rides in the world and the D&SNGRR is rated number three in the world and is number one in the United States.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, located in Southwestern Colorado, is as rich in history as it is scenery. This railroad, established in 1881, has continuously operated coal-fired, steam-powered locomotives through the remote wilderness and high-mountain landscape of the San Juan National Forest. From May through October, the train travels 45 miles to the old mining town of Silverton, where passengers have the chance to enjoy lunch, shopping, and the beautiful surroundings of this old western town. November – April the train travels to Cascade Canyon, a 26-mile-journey that becomes a winter wonderland. This remote destination, situated along the Animas River, allows for exploring the mountain wilderness, or just relaxing by a fire in our covered pavilion.

This year-round railroad offers a variety of excursions, with seating options ranging from open-air gondolas to Presidential-Class luxury coaches. The railroad also offers special events throughout the year. For more information, please visit www.durangotrain.com or call 888-TRAIN-07 (872-4607).
