June 14 - October 7 (Tue. through Sat. only)
This package is over for the 2016 season but please keep it in mind for the 2017 season!
The uniqueness of a historic steam train packaged with age-0ld horseback travel deep in to the wilderness area that few people get a chance to experience makes this truly an ULTIMATE western adventure. Guests continue to let us know that they have yet to find a better ride in the world.
Your ultimate western adventure is just beginning as you leave Durango on the 8:00am steam train bound for Silverton. Your lunch from one of Durango's finest caterers, The Yellow Carrot, will be on board for you to enjoy while riding the train. You'll reach Elk Park flag stop (el. 8,883') around 11:00am where your guide from San Juan Sky Outfitters (CO State license #2592) will be waiting for you with your horses who are well-seasoned to take you up over the Continental Divide. You'll saddle up on a horse that was personally chosen for you to ride along the trail deep into the Weminuche Wilderness Area. On a clear day you will see over 20 different mountain peaks! Enjoy the tranquility as you pass creeks, waterfalls, sweeping meadows and granite cliffs along the way. About halfway to the summit you will stop at the Animas River Overlook to admire the Grenadier Mountain Range and see the narrow gauge tracks of the D&SNGRR. Be sure to keep your camera ready to record this alluring place as well as the rest of this storybook experience. Just before arriving at the top of Molas Pass you will need to absorb the awesomeness of this trip one last time in advance of saying good-bye to your sturdy steed and realize you've just had a 2,000' elevation gain since you detrained.
Once you dismount, your waiting shuttle will drive you to the historic town of Silverton, just a fifteen minute journey away via the San Juan Skyway. From there you can catch the 2:30pm steam train to take you back to Durango. Through August 11, if everyone in the party is willing, you can extend your time on horseback and choose to book your Durango return via our 4:00pm bus. On any date you may also choose to stay overnight in Silverton with return steam train trip to Durango on any subsequent day. Be sure to ask for when booking your package.

“GREAT RIDE AND SCENARY”
We did the ultimate rail and trail ride. Dean was a great host. This was my wife's 1st time on a horse, and she had no problem riding her horse up a very steep mountain trail. The view was great from the train and even better from the back of a horse at 10,000 feet. This was the highlight of our week long trip to Colorado.

“AMAZING - THE BEST RIDE AVAILABLE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013
Dean (owner) was great! He gladly answered my many questions over the phone. Reservations were a breeze. This is the most beautiful ride ever in the high country half way between Durango Mountain Resort & Silverton. You see amazing mountains, ride thru aspen & pine forests & out in open meadows. The horses were carefully chosen to match each rider. Dean requested we email him the weight & height of each rider, prior to our ride, so he could bring the right saddles & horses. He trailers them in from his ranch. Be sure to use the bathroom before you go. There's no facilities in the parking lot where you meet him. His asst, Justin was very friendly & we all enjoyed visiting with both of them on the 2 hr ride. You will not regret choosing Dean….
