trails and rails
What a great way to experience Colorado! Scenic highway, trails and rails all in one day! And it’s perfect for all ages.

You can park your car in the railroad parking lot ($10 fee) and meet your Mild to Wild shuttle driver in the D&SNG’s Durango parking lot (near the parking booth) and then board the Mild to Wild shuttle by 8:00AM. You will be treated to spectacular views while traveling over 2 mountain passes along the scenic ‘San Juan Skyway’ on your way to Silverton.  Upon your arrival at 10am, you’ll meet your Jeep Trail tour guide and spend about 3 hours riding the roads and trails to mining town remnants in custom 4-wheel drive tour vehicles.

Learn the history of the area and discover cascading rivers and tumbling waterfalls as they carve spectacular canyons amidst the towering San Juan Mountains. Keep your eyes open for elusive wildlife and delicate alpine wildflowers during your tour! Once back in town, you’ll have about 1 1/2 hours to explore Silverton, enjoy lunch and some shopping. Complete your day with a journey back to Durango on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Traveling along the canyons of the Animas River in vintage railroad cars, you will experience sights that cannot be seen by road travelers.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR:
You will be reaching elevations near 13,000′ where snow is not uncommon even in July! Dress in layers including warm jacket and a hat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended. You’ll want to get out and explore at some of the stops, so please wear sturdy shoes suitable for climbing around backcountry areas. Water will be provided but is not always accessible while you’re in the vehicle. We recommend bringing along your own personal bottle of water. And of course bring your camera and lots of cards to store the memories you’ll create on this trip!

If you are bringing children: You must bring your own car seats for children who require them on the jeep trail tour; Mild to Wild does not provide any. The Colorado Car Seat Law states children up to 8 years must be in an appropriate car seat/booster seat.
