Railfest

Railfest

August 18-20, 2016

Join us this August as we offer special railroading events! Ride the 1895 locomotive #315 on trips out of Silverton and our all premium-class Presidential Special!

The history of Durango and Silverton is a proud culture of the toughest of the men and women who settled these parts by building mountain railroads to find their riches and dreams.  The Durango & Silverton Railroad has celebrated the history of railroading during the annual Railfest celebration which began in 1999.

Locomotive 315 is a Class C-18 locomotive built in July 1895 by Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built for the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad at the cost of $8001.30. It admirably served on many Colorado rails through the 1940s and remained in service in Durango until 1949. Saved from the scrapheap, #315 was put on display in the railroad town of Durango in 1950. After 58 years of sitting idle, and a 7-year all-volunteer restoration program, #315 was again steamed up and under her own power she arrived in Silverton in September 2007. Now owned by the Durango Railroad Historical Society, #315 is housed in the historic Silverton Northern engine house in Silverton, CO. Be sure to take a trip behind this grand iron horse which has been resurrected from history and graces the rails of the D&SNG only every few years!

When in Silverton, be sure to check out Hardrocker Holiday!Hardrocker Holiday

Mining competitions are known to bring out some of the best in their field and you’ll be awestricken watching the top talent in the hardrock mining competitions. Spectators will have the opportunity to see firsthand the skills that took grit and guts and steeled determination. The Double Jack drilling is a must-see event that takes expert teamwork as one man holds the steel chisel with his bare hands while the other man swings the 8-pound sledge hammer to deliver a firm blow to the chisel, and never miss. While events like this are not recommended for a novice, there are plenty of other events to test the endurance of both men and women of all ages including the wheel barrel race, arm wrestling, team tug-o-war or spike driving. As always there will be events for men, women, and children including horseshoes, hand mucking, machine drilling, tug-of-war, arm wrestling, and much more. Visit Silverton
