Durango Named One of the Rockette’s 10 Favorite Christmas Towns!
Durango, CO -Every year, all across the United States, communities large and small put on displays, festivals and other festivities that celebrate the holiday season in myriad of ways. From a Christmas Village full of elf-sized cottages in Utah to Vermont’s “Wassail Weekend,” here are 10 U.S. towns that take Christmas to a whole new level.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, located in Southwestern Colorado, is as rich in history as it is scenery. This railroad, established in 1881, has continuously operated coal-fired, steam-powered locomotives through the remote wilderness and high-mountain landscape of the San Juan National Forest. From May through October, the train travels 45 miles to the old mining town of Silverton, where passengers have the chance to enjoy lunch, shopping, and the beautiful surroundings of this old western town. November – April the train travels to Cascade Canyon, a 26-mile-journey that becomes a winter wonderland. This remote destination, situated along the Animas River, allows for exploring the mountain wilderness, or just relaxing by a fire in our covered pavilion.
This year-round railroad offers a variety of excursions, with seating options ranging from open-air gondolas to Presidential-Class luxury coaches. The railroad also offers special events throughout the year. For more information, please visit www.durangotrain.com or call 888-TRAIN-07 (872-4607).</p
